Ship 129 Returns from a Transformational Florida Sea Base Adventure

In late May, a crew from Ship 129 embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Florida Sea Base in Islamorada, Florida, beginning with a stop at Camp Sawyer on Scout Key in the Florida Keys.

The trip started with a long but exciting travel day filled with new sights and experiences, including wildlife encounters, snorkel testing, tide pools, and plenty of anticipation for the week ahead.

After arriving at Sea Base, the crew completed medical and training requirements, toured the facility, met their captain, and got their first look at the sailboat that would become their home on the water. Despite windy conditions forcing some schedule adjustments, the Scouts embraced every opportunity that came their way.

Instead of sailing on one particularly windy day, the crew enjoyed a fishing excursion where they caught, cleaned, and prepared their own fresh fish. They also participated in sailing instruction, spent time at a local swimming beach, and celebrated a crew member's 18th birthday with an authentic Florida Key lime pie secured by their staff guide.

The highlight of the week was a day of snorkeling on the crystal-clear waters of the Florida Keys. Scouts observed barracuda, parrotfish, squid, lobster, sea slugs, and countless tropical fish. During the journey between snorkeling sites, the crew received an unexpected gift from nature when a pod of dolphins appeared and played alongside their boat.

The adventure continued with a traditional Sea Base luau, team-building activities, and preparation for their multi-day sailing experience. During their time aboard the sailboat, Scouts learned responsibility, teamwork, and leadership while standing watches, helping operate the vessel, and living together in a challenging marine environment.

As the trip concluded, the crew completed their final anchor watch, cleaned and returned the boat to port, and headed home with memories that will last a lifetime.

More than just an outdoor adventure, Sea Base challenged these young people to step outside their comfort zones, work together as a team, and develop confidence and resilience. The crew represented Ship 129 and Scouting America with pride, demonstrating the leadership, character, and spirit that make Scouting experiences so impactful.

Through Scouting America's Sea Base programs, youth are empowered through ocean exploration, adventure, leadership development, and environmental education. For the members of Ship 129, this was far more than a trip—it was a transformational experience and an adventure they will never forget.
