| | What is NYLT? NYLT is an outdoor youth leadership development experience for youth leaders to reinforce their home Scoutmaster's Troop Leadership Training or Crew Advisor’s Junior Leader Training program which he/she conducts in their home Troop, Team, or Crew. NYLT is conducted by the Northeast Illinois Council Training Committee based on a syllabus approved by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America. It is exclusively, youth staff led with adult supervision. What is its purpose? NYLT has three aims: · First, to give each participant a varied experience in Scoutcraft skills that can be shared with the members of his/her Troop, Team, or Crew; · Second, to relate the “know, be, and do” leadership skills to his/her home Troop, Team, or Crew leadership role; and · Third, to give participants a chance to exchange ideas and experiences with Junior Leaders from other Troops, Teams, or Crews. Who may attend? NYLT participants should hold a Troop, Team, or Crew leadership office as defined by the current Scoutmaster Handbook, Venturing Guidebook, or “Intro to Leadership Skills for Troops/Teams” (ILST), or are likely to assume one of these leadership positions soon. Course participants must be at least 14 years old* upon arrival at camp. Since NYLT is held in a wilderness camp setting, using the patrol method, the Scout or Venturer should have completed the Camping and Cooking merit badges, or have comparable knowledge, and have at least one long term camp experience of at 7 days and nights minimum.
NOTE: Effective with the 2010 NYLT Course, Venture Crew members male or female are eligible to attend. Venturers MUST have completed the “Intro to Leadership Skills For Crews” (ILSC) training. ***SCOUTMASTERS/TEAM/CREW ADVISORS PLEASE NOTE: This year, we will conduct 1 Troop of 48 Participants maximum on a first come, first serve basis; early registration is essential. This course is designed as a leadership learning experience for MATURE YOUTH ONLY; Immature or younger Scouts, Youth with discipline problems, or youth who have stopped medication for the summer, or any youth with little camping and cooking experience may not benefit from this program and may be sent home at their or their Unit's expense without any refund of fees. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY YOUTH, WHO YOU FEEL, MAY HAVE TO LEAVE ANY TIME DURING THE COURSE as ANY Scout or Venturer WHO DOES LEAVE EARLY, FOR ANY REASON, WILL NOT receive any refund or a course completion certificate. Is the home Scoutmaster/Venture Crew Advisor involved? Very much so; NYLT is intended to strengthen the relationship between the Junior Leader and their Scoutmaster/Team/Crew Advisor who have attended the 21st Century Wood Badge training, and teach the “servant leadership” concept. Specifically, the Scout/Team/Crew Member will leave the course with a set of individual “vision goals” to be completed with the home Scoutmaster/Advisor's approval and supervision. A special orientation is held for home Scoutmasters/Team/Crew Advisors and parents, prior to the course to explain this process further, if needed; scheduled date is 18 May 2013 from 9:00 – 12:00 noon at the Council Service Center in Highland Park. What are the Course dates? June 16 – 22 June, 2013. Method of transportation will be by coach bus leaving from and returning to Lake Forest High School WEST Campus, SW corner of Waukegan Road and Route 60.
What is the cost?
The cost for this training remains at $260.00; if you reserve and pay by 1 Jan 2013, your course fee will be discounted by $20 to $240.00. This includes all food, non-refundable coach bus transportation to and from the conference, use of all patrol camping equipment, NYLT Course hat, tee shirt (additional hats or tee shirts may be purchased for $10.00 each), backpack, water bottle, and personal NYLT training reference materials and CD. A non-refundable deposit of $60.00 per participant must accompany the Troop/Crew reservation (by April 1, 2013) with the balance received not later than April 30, 2013. Cancellations after April 30, 2013 cannot be refunded as they have been committed to course operation. What is the food like? If your Scouts have mastered outdoor cooking and can cook over open fires they will think they are eating Grandma's cooking. Menus are simple but challenging. Completing the Camping and Cooking merit badge, prior to the course, is the key to your Scouts satisfaction. (Any “junk food” items, contraband, electronic devices, or unlisted prescriptions to include over the counter medications will be withheld at the start of the course during the shakedown inspection and returned at the end of the week; Medical/Religious substitutions for foods and allergies as well as all current medications must be well documented, in advance, on a current youth medical form; THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!) Are there any other requirements? Each Participant will receive, by mail, a detailed list of personal equipment he/she may and may not bring to NYLT. Please remember our motto is “be prepared”. Good clothing for any weather; a good sleeping bag, seam-sealed waterproof 2-4 person tent, and non-aerosol (ONLY) insect/tick repellents are essential for this course. Each Participant must also be able to transport all of his/her own gear at least one mile. The BSA Field Uniform (complete Uniform to include official BSA or Unit hat, Official BSA Shirt [long & short sleeve], BSA switchback pants, shorts or long trousers), BSA Belt, BSA socks, and hiking boots) is included in this list as a requirement for the leadership skill of setting the example and representing the group. The Field uniform is required to get on the bus trip up and upon arrival at Brownsea. The Field Uniform is also worn at all troop assemblies, classes, and at all meals. Cold and wet weather should also be anticipated and planned for. Remember the camp Trading Post is normally NOT OPEN for purchase of any REPLACEMENT/MISSING CLOTHING OR GEAR. Note:, Only official BSA uniforms and clothing are allowed at NYLT. Radios, Walkmans, T.V.'s, electronic games, cell phones, non-BSA appropriate clothing (except sleeping clothing) should not be brought to the course. Any prohibited items will be withheld by the adult staff at our arrival shakedown and stored until the end of course. Our program runs from dawn until after dusk nightly. What if a Scout/Crew Member needs to leave early? The course runs from Sunday June 16th through Saturday June 22nd. All participants should plan on being at the course through that entire time. Any participant who leaves before 11:00pm Friday June 21st will not have completed the course and will need to repeat the entire course to receive their completion certificate for phase 1, no exceptions. With the exception of family emergencies, NO Scout will be allowed to leave camp early without advance written arrangements coordinated through the Course Director and Professional Staff Advisor prior to the Scout boarding the bus on June 16th; again, NO EXCEPTIONS ALLOWED. If our troop/crew is attending MaKaJaWan the week after NYLT can a participant stay over Saturday Night to meet up with the troop Sunday? No. The NYLT registration gives us permission to house and transport the participant only from Sunday June 16th to 11:30 A.M. on Saturday June 22nd. Once the bus is loaded on Saturday morning, there are no longer NYLT or Makajawan Camp staff available to take responsibility for any youth. Makajawan has a Fun with Son weekend and are gearing up for week one of summer camp and again, have NO STAFF AVAILABLE to provide supervision for any youth left behind; EVERYONE gets on the bus to go home, unless it has been coordinated, in writing, in advance, with the NYLT Course Director and Professional Staff Advisor. Will there be a BSA Trading Post? NO. However there will be a limited supply of “essentials” such as insect repellent, batteries, etc. for purchase. All registered Scoutmasters/Venture Crew Advisors will receive a letter in February outlining the reservation procedure.
