We are happy to introduce our new Scout Executive!
Several weeks ago, we announced that Michael Hale had accepted a promotion to Deputy Region Director for the Western Region of the BSA. At that time, the Executive Committee of the Board created a Selection Committee to identify candidates and select a new Scout Executive for our council.
I am pleased to share that after working with the National BSA team to identify suitable candidates and conduct a thorough selection process, we have hired G. Douglas Nelson as the next Scout Executive/CEO of the Northeast Illinois Council.
Doug brings a wealth of Scouting experience to the NEIC. He has been a Scouting professional for 26 years. His early career began with councils in Indiana and Ohio, and in 2005 he was appointed the Director of Field Service for the Northern Star Council in St. Paul, MN immediately following what was then the largest merger in BSA’s history. Doug led the shaping of the new council. In 2011, Doug was appointed the Scout Executive of the Miami Valley Council in Dayton, Ohio, where he brought the council from facing many challenges to scoring quite well in Journey to Excellence using a well-executed strategic plan. Doug has been a leader across all areas of council operations from field service, to fundraising, to program.
Doug is an Eagle Scout and Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. Additionally, he received the Founders Award and National Distinguished Service Award of the Order of the Arrow. Having served on staff at several National Jamborees, NOAC, National Camp School, and as a faculty member at Philmont Training Center, he brings a broad perspective to his role as our new Scout Executive.
Doug and his wife Linda have three boys ranging in age from 7 to 22, and he has held many volunteer positions within the BSA volunteer structure at both the Pack and Troop level. He is a long-time Rotarian with the Dayton Rotary and an avid supporter of youth hockey. Doug will officially start his new role on April 16, 2017.
Please join me in welcoming Doug to the Northeast Illinois Council. We have every expectation that he will build on our successes and elevate Scouting to new levels in concert with our volunteers and staff.
